A Journey Through the Magalies: A Walking Adventure in the Footsteps of Middle-earth
Come, kindred spirits of the Free Peoples, and embark upon a morning’s ramble through the fair lands near the Magalies Mountains, where the air is sweet, the rivers run clear, and adventure stirs beneath the boughs. This shall not be a journey of haste, but one of merriment and camaraderie, where the wayfarer’s heart is lifted by good company and the telling of tales.
Attire of the Folk of Middle-earth is heartily encouraged! Whether you don the humble garb of the Shirefolk, the sturdy raiment of the Rangers, or the flowing robes of the Eldar, let the spirit of Middle-earth guide your choice.
Guides, skilled in the lore of old, shall walk among you, ensuring none lose their way and that the road is made lighter with song and story. Groups shall be small—bands of eight to ten, as a true fellowship ought to be.
Location: B'sorah Trails, Broederstroom
Date: 11 July 2026
Arrival: 7:30 in the morning, so that we may take to the road in increments from 8 to 8:30.
The Path: Choose your adventure: a pleasant 5 km stroll, a hearty 7.5 km ramble, or a grand 10 km wander. Our path will lead us through shady glades, across babbling rivers, and along hidden trails best enjoyed at an unhurried pace.
For Hobbits know that the finest part of any journey is not arriving, but all the wonderful things discovered along the way. We walk for the joy of wandering, not for speed, and there will be no rushing to the end. Those eager to charge ahead may find themselves better suited to another road.
Noon-day gathering: from 12 o’clock, at the appointed picnic grounds.
Return to Hearth and Home: Though the road goes ever on, we shall linger at the picnic site in merriment until the hour of three.
The hike itself costs R80 per person, payable directly to the venue upon your arrival.
Once our journeys are complete, we shall gather at the picnic site to share stories and enjoy each other's company. Those wishing to join the picnic area are required to pre-book at a cost of R40 per person. Please complete the booking form and we will send you a payment link. Even if you do not intend to join the picnic area, we ask that all hikers complete the form so that we may know how many travellers to expect.
To ensure each fellowship departs on time:
10 km Group: Departs promptly at 08:00
7.5 km Group: Departs promptly at 08:15
5 km Group: Departs promptly at 08:30
The roads wait for no one. Departure times will be observed strictly, and groups will not be delayed for late arrivals, bathroom breaks, or other last-minute matters. Please plan accordingly.
Travellers who miss their assigned departure may join the next available group. Should you miss the final 5 km departure, you are welcome to undertake the journey on your own.
We will not be providing catering on this occasion. Please bring your own food, refreshments, and any provisions you may require for both the hike and the picnic gathering afterwards.
Choosing Your Road
All three routes eventually meet, and the final stretch of roughly 2 km is shared by every group. For those whose feet have had enough adventure by the end of the day, there is also an option to take a shorter route and bypass the final kilometre.
The 10 km Journey
For those seeking a longer adventure, this route offers the greatest elevation gain and rewards travellers with the most scenic viewpoints along the way. The path begins largely exposed to the sun, so be sure to bring suitable sun protection. Around the halfway mark, the trail becomes more shaded, providing welcome relief as the journey continues.
The 7.5 km Ramble
The most shaded of the three routes, this path spends much of its time winding alongside water. Along the way, we will pause at a small riverside rest spot where travellers may cool their feet in the flowing water before continuing onward. This route offers a gentle balance of woodland, riverbanks, and leisurely exploration.
The 5 km Stroll
This is the same beloved route we followed last year. With only minimal elevation gain, it is well-suited to those seeking a more relaxed wander. The trail alternates between shaded sections and open areas, offering a comfortable and accessible journey without sacrificing the beauty of the landscape.
Whichever road you choose, remember that this is a journey to be savoured. We walk not to conquer the trail, but to enjoy the company, the scenery, and the simple joy of wandering together.
A vessel of water, that thirst may not hinder thee.
Sturdy shoes, for the path is uneven, though fair.
Sun-warding salves, for even in the waning season, the light of the sun holds strength.
If thou wouldst sit beneath the open sky, a (camping) chair of one’s own is wise, or a blanket soft, though some tables shall be provided within at the site of picnics.
Bring thine own sustenance, that hunger may not trouble thee.
Gather, ye wanderers, for the road calls, and fair company awaits!
